About Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars situated at the upper and lower back corners of your mouth. They are the final four of your permanent adult teeth. Around half of all individuals have at least one wisdom tooth, though some may not develop any. Both scenarios are normal.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth can lead to complications that worsen over time, including pain, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth. To prevent these issues, your dentist may suggest removing them. The most common reasons for wisdom tooth extraction include impaction, crowding, or decay.

Impacted wisdom teeth

Because they’re so far back in your mouth, wisdom teeth may not come in normally. They can be trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful.

Wisdom teeth crowding

Sometimes, there isn’t enough space in your mouth for additional teeth to emerge. When your jaw lacks room for an extra set of molars, wisdom teeth can grow at the wrong angle and press against nearby teeth. This pressure can damage adjacent teeth and cause them to shift out of alignment.

Cavities and gum disease

It can be difficult to clean your wisdom teeth with a toothbrush or dental floss, making it easy for food to get trapped around them. Over time, this buildup can lead to plaque, which causes gum disease and tooth decay, also known as cavities.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Your surgery should take 45 minutes or less. You’ll get one of these types of anesthesia so you don’t feel pain during the removal:

Local anesthesia

Your doctor will numb your mouth with a shot of a local anesthetic such as novocaine, lidocaine, or mepivacaine. You may also breathe nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to relax or even doze during surgery. You should feel alert again shortly afterward.

Sedation anesthesia

The surgeon will numb your mouth and give you drugs through a vein in your arm to make you drowsy. You might sleep during the whole procedure.

General anesthesia

You’ll either get drugs through a vein or breathe gas in through a mask. You’ll be deeply asleep the whole time and might not wake up for an hour or so after the surgery.

Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you need your wisdom teeth removed, your dentist will usually refer you to an oral surgeon who will do the procedure. At your first appointment, you’ll talk about the process. Make sure you:

Talk about any health problems you have.

List any drugs you take regularly.

Discuss what type of anesthesia you’ll have. You can either be awake or asleep during your surgery.

Plan time off from work or school to have your surgery and rest afterward at home. Set up child care, pet care, or a ride home if needed.

Ask any questions you have about the surgery.

Step-by-Step Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

Removing wisdom teeth is crucial for restoring and maintaining optimal oral health. At Professional Dental in Utah, our wisdom teeth removal process is simple and effective. Here are the 4 key steps involved in getting your wisdom teeth removed for a healthier, pain-free smile
1
Local anesthesia
Local anesthesia is injected on the extraction site to numb the area before removing wisdom teeth. Sedatives or general anesthesia are given to patients with anxiety.
2
A small incision in the gums
A small incision in the gums is created to expose the wisdom teeth to be removed. Removing wisdom teeth may require being cut into smaller pieces before extraction.
3
The wisdom tooth is extracted
The wisdom tooth is extracted out of the socket. The wisdom teeth are loosened first and then pulled off the socket completely.
4
The extraction site is disinfected
The extraction site is disinfected to make sure the socket is clean before stitching. The stitches dissolve on their own in a few days. You will be asked to bite on a gauze pad to facilitate blood clotting on the extraction site.

Frequently Asked Questions

More frequent questions about this dental service
Do you have to get your wisdom teeth removed?

Dentists recommend preventive wisdom teeth removal in many cases. But not everyone needs their wisdom teeth extracted. Some people have healthy wisdom teeth that grow in normally and don’t cause any issues. Others have impacted wisdom teeth that increase their risk for decay, gum disease and other oral health consequences.

The best way to find out if you need wisdom tooth removal is to talk to your dentist. They can take X-rays to determine the position of your wisdom teeth and tell you whether you need treatment.

How long after wisdom teeth removal can I eat?

You can eat as soon as you leave your appointment, as long as you’re feeling up to it. Stick to a soft food diet for the first three to five days, then add more solid foods as your comfort level allows.

If you get a milkshake or smoothie, use a spoon instead of a straw. Drinking through a straw can dislodge blood clots and cause dry sockets.

When can I go back to work or school?
You’ll need to rest at home for three to five days after wisdom tooth removal. Most people can resume work, school and other routines at this point. If you have a job that requires physical labor, you may need to take a few extra days off. Anything that raises your heart rate can increase postoperative pain, bleeding and swelling.
How long does wisdom teeth surgery take?
The length of wisdom teeth surgery depends on how many wisdom teeth you have removed, and if they are impacted or surfaced. Removal of four impacted wisdom teeth usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.
How long does it take for wisdom teeth to heal?
It takes 1-2 weeks for your gums to heal after your wisdom teeth are removed.
Can I drink soda after wisdom teeth removal?
Don’t drink soda or other carbonated drinks for at least 5 days after your procedure. Soda and other bubbly drinks slow down wound healing. They can also loosen your blood clots, which increases your risk of dry socket.
