About Orthodontics (Braces and Clear Aligners)

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy, functional bite. A bite is part tooth alignment and part jaw position. Correctly aligned bites promote good oral health in addition to good general health. It also has the bonus of straightening the teeth, which may give a person more confidence in their smile.

Common orthodontic problems

Patients who receive orthodontic care to correct issues with their bite have fewer problems with decay and fewer occurrences of TMJ dysfunction. Both younger and older patients can receive orthodontic treatment to improve their bite.

Overbite

When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth too much.

Underbite

When the lower front teeth protrude past the upper front teeth.

Crossbite

When some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside.

Overjet

When the upper front teeth protrude outward over the lower teeth.

Overcrowding

When there isn't enough space in the mouth for all the teeth to fit normally.

Gaps

When there are spaces between the teeth due to missing teeth or extra space in the jaw.

Transposition

When two teeth switch places in the dental arch.

Orthodontic treatment

There are several treatments that fall under the specialty of orthodontics. Some of the most common include:

Braces

Braces gradually shift your teeth into their desired positions over time using a combination of brackets, bands and wires. There are different types of braces depending on your needs, including traditional metal braces and clear (ceramic) braces.

Retainers

If you wear braces or clear aligners, you’ll need a retainer once your orthodontic treatment ends. A retainer is a custom oral appliance that keeps your teeth from drifting out of their proper positions. Your orthodontist can tell you how often you’ll need to wear your retainer to maintain the results of treatment.

Clear aligners

Clear orthodontic aligners are a popular alternative to braces. We are Invisalign Certified Providers®. Rather than using brackets and wires to straighten your teeth, these systems use a series of custom-made, clear aligner trays. You wear each set of trays for one to two weeks before switching them out for the next set in the series. Over time, the clear aligners shift your teeth into their proper positions.

Palate expanders

Orthodontists recommend some treatments during childhood. This is because a child’s facial bones are still developing and they’re much easier to move and manipulate. A palate (palatal) expander helps to widen a child’s upper jaw. Most children don’t need palate expanders. But under the right circumstances, these devices can create extra space without the need for tooth extractions or other procedures.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® are clear plastic aligners that correct the alignment of teeth without the look of traditional braces. Instead of using brackets and wires, we customize a series of dental appliances that shift the teeth over a period of time. Because the aligners are not attached to your teeth, patients must remember to wear them consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

More frequent questions about this dental service
How Will Orthodontic Work Help Me Or My Child?
Orthodontic treatment will help the patient bite, chew, and speak properly. When teeth function correctly, they tend to look nice as well. An attractive smile is a pleasant side effect of orthodontic treatment, and it can have emotional benefits. Self-confidence and self-esteem may improve as orthodontic treatment brings teeth, lips and face into proportion. Straight teeth are less prone to decay, gum disease and injury.
Are Your Orthodontists Board-Certified?
Yes. Our orthodontists have completed the American Board of Orthodontics Specialty Certification exams.
Do You Have Payment Options?
Yes, we do. We have month-to-month financing options with 0% Interest. All payment details will be discussed and explained after after a free initial consultation with an orthodontist.
What is the best age to start orthodontic treatment?
While orthodontic treatment can be beneficial at any age, it is generally recommended to have an initial orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Early evaluation allows for the detection of potential issues and the opportunity for more effective intervention. However, many people also successfully begin orthodontic treatment in their teenage years or adulthood.
How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment used. On average, treatment can last from 12 to 24 months. Some cases may be completed in as little as six months, while more complex issues may take up to three years. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific needs.
Are there alternatives to traditional metal braces?
Yes, there are several alternatives to traditional metal braces. These include ceramic braces, which are less noticeable; lingual braces, which are placed on the back of the teeth; and clear aligners, such as Invisalign, which are removable and nearly invisible. Your orthodontist can help determine the best option for your treatment goals and lifestyle.
